What are Kilowatt Hours?
A kilowatt-hour (kWh) is a unit of measure for energy usage. It represents the amount of energy used by a device that consumes one kilowatt (1000 watts) of power for one hour. In other words, it measures the amount of power something needs to turn on and how much it will use over the course of an hour.
In relation to electric vehicles, the battery capacity is often measured in kilowatt-hours. This tells you how much energy the battery can store and how far the vehicle can travel on a single charge. The more kilowatt-hours a battery has, the longer the range of the vehicle.
Think of kilowatt hours as a volume unit, as in how much energy can be stored in a battery.
Examples:
– If your car has a battery of 100kWh of capacity or energy, and you charge it at a steady power of 1kW, you will need 100 hours in order to fill it up entirely.
– If your car has a battery of 100kWh, and you charge it at a steady power of 10kW, you will need 10 hours to charge it entirely.
And so on.
