What actually changed on the Model Y L
The Model Y L is not a trim level. It is a longer car with an extra row, and the changes are structural rather than cosmetic. That is why fitment breaks in some places and holds in others.

Seating is a 2+2+2 layout. Row two is two captain’s chairs that slide and recline. Row three is a 50:50 split bench with heating and power recline, and it gets its own USB-C ports, cupholders and pillar vents. There are buttons in the cargo area that fold rows two and three flat.
Wheels and tires: the one clean carry-over
This is the good news, and it is worth real money. Cargo and the third row: where fitment breaks first
Nothing cut for a five seat Model Y cargo bay will fit an L. The extra 6.9 inches of body sits behind the rear axle, the floor is a different shape, and there is now a third row folding into it.
The numbers make the point. With the third row up you have 14.8 cubic feet behind it, against 13.1 in a seven seat five row car. That sounds close, but the space is a different shape: shallower front to back, wider, and bounded by a seat back that reclines. A trunk liner moulded for a five seat Y will sit proud at the edges and slide.
Fold everything and you get 85.6 cubic feet against 69.4. That extra volume is why third row owners tend to want a full length cargo mat rather than a moulded trunk tray, and why a five seat trunk organizer ends up floating in the middle of a much longer floor.
Captain’s chairs: the second thing that breaks
Row two is two separate chairs with a gap between them, not a bench. Every accessory that assumes a bench is wrong on an L.
- Second row mats: a one piece rear mat cut for a bench leaves the centre gap uncovered and does not sit against the chair rails.
- Seat covers: bench covers do not fit individual chairs, and there is now a third row with no equivalent on a five seat car.
- Seat back organizers: these usually still work, since they strap to a headrest, but the chairs slide and recline, so check the strap length.
The chairs sliding is the detail people miss. Anything anchored between the seat and the floor needs to tolerate the seat moving.
What carries over from the front cabin
The dash and front seats are unchanged, so front cabin accessories move across. A magnetic phone mount is the clearest example: it clips to the same screen or vent position it always did.

- The frunk. Whether the L uses the same front tub as the rest of the range.
- The centre console. Whether it matches the Juniper console or something else.
- Glass roof length. The roofline is 1.7 inches taller, but we have not confirmed the panel length, which is what a roof sunshade depends on.
